Spavinaw Creek
Conservation Project
About the project
Starting point
The first step to understand the scope of the project has been to learn all the partners who want to help protect this valuable natural resource. We have also fought to find out how we could make improvements in preventing stream bank erosion, one of the most alarming challenges to the protection of Spavinaw Creek.
Support from local communities
Location, scale, and accessibility is absolutely crucial to this project. We want to make the biggest but most realistic impact to conserve the watershed. Outreach, education, community partnerships are essential to the success of this project.
Our first project is for the preservation of Spavinaw Creek. In 1923, the City of Tulsa built its first dam to create Lake Spavinaw. The Spavinaw Water Project, as it was called, was created to help provide fresh water to the City of Tulsa which is roughly 60 miles away. In 1952 Spavinaw Creek was dammed a few miles upstream creating Lake Eucha. The City of Tulsa has worked to protect the quality of water in the lakes. However, aging dams, floods, and other factors have greatly impacted the Spavinaw Creek watershed. Stream bank erosion, frequent floods, and siltation of the water are occurring more frequently. Help us restore and protect Spavinaw Creek.
